Links act like 'The Pied Piper' for the search engine spiders. They travel through your internal pages via text links but more importantly they also follow keyword rich text links to your website from existing, well established sites. |

So far your on-site optimization has enabled the search engines and indeed your target audience to build up a good picture of your websites overall content.
As we mentioned before the search engine spiders feed off links. They follow the link text (termed anchor text) from your home page through to your internal pages so it is a good idea to use your targeted keywords in the 'anchor text' for these internal links.
If there is a particular keyword you would really like to pursue a top ten ranking for on the search engines, the best approach is to initiate a slow and steady link campaign with other well established, high ranking sites that relate to your websites theme or subject matter. These sites are already classed as high quality by the search engines and are therefore spidered on a regular daily basis. Once your site is linked on one of these sites not only will the spiders follow the keyword anchor text through to your website but also targeted viewers, already on these sites and interested in what your website has to offer will click through too.
The web sites featured on the first page of search results for any given keyword have reached this position firstly through good on-site optimization and secondly through the amount of related, high ranking sites linking through to them with the desired keywords placed in their links 'anchor text'.
The more sites competing for your desired keywords the more incoming links you will need to accumulate to appear within the first few pages of the search results. This is where we really need to start concentrating on finding keywords related to your sites pages with a decent number of searches but with a low number of competing sites, rather than chasing the more general keywords we used earlier to help the search engines build a picture of your sites overall theme.
In the past webmasters have used underhanded tactics to gain top ten rankings for their websites very quickly by using paid 'link farms' to generate a huge amount of incoming links from any old website with their desired keywords in the incoming links anchor text. This worked well for a while but search engines are forever getting smarter and now pick up this kind of behavior as 'spamming' which can get your site dropped from the search engines altogether. The best approach is a slow, steady link campaign to related sites using variations of keywords in your anchor text links.
